One of the most tooth destructive conditions is bruxism. This is the unintentional subconscious clenching and grinding of teeth, mostly occurring during sleep and times of stress. Many sufferers are unaware of their condition and extent of the damage caused until diagnosed during their dental checkup.
Bruxism can lead to a number of painful side effects such as tooth sensitivity and result in chips and cracks in your tooth enamel, which may require extensive restorative procedures if not treated in its early stage.
For some people, constant clenching can cause headaches, facial muscle soreness, neck and shoulder pain, all of which may be wrongly attributed to a back or muscle problem and not bruxism, in addition, jaw misalignment can be either a symptom or a cause of bruxism.
While you sleep, the force at which the upper and lower jaws clench together can be up to six times greater than when you are awake, so much more damage to your teeth, gums and jaw alignment can result, including the loosening of fillings and breakage of other restorations.
Signs that can indicate bruxism include:
- Teeth grinding loud enough to wake a sleep partner
- Worn tooth enamel exposing the underlying dentine
- Increased tooth sensitivity to hot and cold
- Jaw pain or tightness in your facial muscles
- Earache not caused by infection
- A dull morning headache
- Teeth that have worn down, become flattened, chipped or cracked
- Recurring facial pain
- Indication of biting the inside of your cheek
- Loose or mobile teeth
At Smile Dynamics, we are able to provide various treatment options depending upon your personal needs. One of the most effective solutions is a custom-made night guard, which is designed to absorb the biting force while you sleep. This acrylic guard, similar in appearance to a sport mouthguard but much finer, prevents further damage to your tooth enamel, gums and soft tissue. It will also reposition your jaw to its correct position so your muscles can relax.
Bruxism may recur during times of stress, knowing the signs can help limit any impact on your oral and general health caused as a result of clenching and grinding your teeth.
After completing a thorough examination to evaluate what tooth damage has occurred, your Smile Dynamics dentist can advise if you require any restorative treatment and develop a detailed treatment plan.
