Orthodontics

Orthodontic treatments of today are far removed from those of years ago. They are now available in tooth coloured ceramic, clear removable acrylic aligners, finer metal and wires and braces that may even be secured behind your teeth so no one knows you are wearing them.

No longer only being prescribed for children, many adults too are choosing to have orthodontic treatment to correct problems that extend back to their childhood. One of the newest developments in adult orthodontic treatment is the Damon system.

Adult (Damon System)

The Damon System is a revolutionary new way of providing orthodontic treatment to our adult patients. Conventional orthodontic treatment often requires removal of healthy teeth and/or the use of palatal expanders to increase space.

This approach is often uncomfortable, takes longer to achieve end results, can leave a narrower arch and a flat profile. The Damon system achieves full, natural smiles through the application of light biologically sensible forces, specifically designed to improve the overall facial result of each patient.

The Damon System

The Damon System utilised by the Smile Dynamics team combines three key components, which when used in conjunction with each other, deliver faster treatment, meaning fewer appointments, greater comfort and consistent high-quality results:

  1. Damon passive self-ligating braces that eliminate the need for elastic or metal "ties".
  2. Light high-technology shape-memory wires that move teeth faster and require fewer adjustments.
  3. A new clinically proven treatment approach, which aligns your teeth and enhances your facial aesthetics - usually without extractions or rapid palatal expanders.

Children’s Orthodontics

At Smile Dynamics we believe a beautiful, healthy smile begins early.Children as young as 3 years of age are assessed for any myofunctional habits which may lead to dental and skeletal disruption. For example:

  • thumb and lip sucking
  • mouth breathing
  • dummies or pacifiers
  • tongue ties
  • forward and lateral tongue thrust
  • reverse swallow patterns

The next assessment involves the upper airway. It is critical to the healthy development of teeth and jaws that nasal airway is functioning. A closer look at the following structures often involves referral on to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist if concerns are raised.

  • enlarged tonsils or adenoid tissue
  • nasal obstruction
  • underdeveloped upper jaw

Following on from this we monitor the orthopaedic development of your child looking at:

  • development of the size and shape of the jaws
  • facial proportions
  • position of the upper and lower jaws relative to each other

The final step on this journey to a healthy individual, with a stable, beautiful, full smile and face is the dental correction. That is,moving the teeth with braces into their final aesthetic and functional positions.

Orthodontic treatment is not only designed to create a perfectly straight smile, it also corrects alignment problems between the teeth, jaw, head and neck, which may develop into other health complications later in life. Orthodontic treatment can also help prevent the abnormal or uneven wear of teeth caused by an irregular bite pattern.

One of the main benefits of commencing treatment at such a young age, is because a child’s teeth and facial bones are still in the developmental stage, they are much easier to guide into their optimal position. This often results in less treatment time, expense and may also mean less time in fixed braces or they are not required at all.

Your child’s health is important to us and an orthodontic evaluation will be conducted early and monitored at every hygiene or examination visit.
