Family Dentistry

Visit us at Smile Dynamics, where we are happy to treat the whole family!

Oral health plays a vital role in your child’s general health and early development. Correctly aligned, healthy teeth enable your child to eat a variety of foods and chew efficiently.

Teeth are also critical when sounding words as your child learns to talk and eat properly. While your child develops, there baby teeth will pave the way for their adult teeth so if they experience orthodontic and dental health problems while they are younger this will only be prevalent in their future oral health when their adult teeth start to erupt.

At Smile Dynamics, we understand how important baby teeth are and we treat children with the same importance and dedication as our older patients.

When should I start brushing my child’s teeth?

You should start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as the first one appears so they associate this is a normal part of everyday life. Gentle brushing with a soft bristled baby toothbrush and a pea sized amount of toothpaste is all that is needed to ensure your child’s oral health.

This is also a great time to bring your child in for their first dental check-up as we can easily track their dental development from an early age. We also encourage bringing your child in early as it allows us to help them form positive associations with oral health and the dentist.

Examinations at Smile Dynamics are comfortable and understandable for children…

At our Wahroonga dental practice we are dedicated to helping you and your children maintain their natural teeth for life. We often start to see children as infants and check that all the teeth are erupting normally and if there are any “tongue tie” issues. By about 2 to 2 ½ years we recommend a quick and simple, “tooth count and ride in the chair”, for your child to familiarise them with the dental office and put them at ease. We want them to be excited about coming in for their next visit. By bringing them in for a check-up regularly (every six months), we can conduct thorough dental examinations which include:

  • Assessing the teeth that have emerged for any disease, damage or decay
  • Checking their soft tissues i.e. lips, cheeks, tongue and gums for any signs of dental disease
  • Assess that tooth eruption and jaw development is normal
  • Assess the airway for good nasal breathing.
  • Cleaning and polishing teeth and education in oral hygiene.

By assessing the above we can easily track your child’s dental development and be more likely to discover any issues early before they become severe or problematic.

Dental Sealants are a fantastic way to prevent your child from further tooth decay…

Dental sealants are a great preventive treatment for children who have deep fissures in their molar teeth.

Sealants are resin coatings that are used to fill in the deep grooves and pits that often occur in back molars and premolars. It is a simple preventive treatment, with no drilling or anaesthetic needed, that can protect otherwise decay prone teeth from early damage to dental decay.

At Smile Dynamics we know a beautiful smile starts early and that prevention is better than cure.

If my child’s primary teeth fall out anyway, why is it important to maintain them?

Prevention of childhood tooth decay is very important for their long-term oral health.

Untreated decayed baby teeth can abscess and there is nothing worse than a child with an infected tooth and in pain. Although your child’s baby teeth will fall out naturally, they are critical in maintaining space in the jaws for the adult teeth to erupt uncrowded and in a good bite. They are critical for speech and chewing and aesthetics.  We are very proactive about your childs teeth remaining healthy at Smile Dynamics.
